This video provides intruction in the techniques that make Milanese Lace so unique.  Crolling tapes;  highlighted by decorate stitches are characteristic elements that define the Milanese style.  Lacemakers will have the chance to learn a combination of traditional and innovative skills applied in a motif-format using coloured threads.  Key techniques covered are: how to work four different Decorative Braids, Tight-Point and Scroll Turns, Turning-Stitches, Adding Pairs, Back-Stitch, Sewings, Setting up at a Point, and Bundle and Tie Finishing.  A Hummingbird design is used to teach these lessons.  the pattern is suitable for those new to Milanese or for anyone wishing to gain more expertise with essential skills.  A small Heart pattern is included with the printed materials for additional practice.

English Language.

In this program, Susan demonstrates her own unique approaches to starting and finishing a variety of torchon lace projects.  Susan explains each of her techniques with diagrams and demonstrates them on the pillow.  Project include: a bookwmark with a whole stitch start and a braided ending, a bookmark with a false footside start and a woven ending, a bookmark starting and ending with picots, a circular Torchon edging with a Flanders-style overlapped finish, an edging starting at the footside and an edging starting and finishing along a gimp thread.  Included with this program are four pattern sheets with the six projects Susan demonstrates on camera and two additional pricking for further practice along with working diagrams for each pattern.

Chantilly lace is a black silk point ground lace.  It became popular in the 19th century and was most extensively used on fashions and accessories.  Motifs in Chantilly are most often worked in half stitch.  Chantilly is made with untwisted unboiled black silk threads ( AVAILABLE FROM JOSCO LACE SUPPLIES) and for the course pairs, untwisted boiled black silk thread is most used (ALSO FROM JOSCO).

This video provides instruction in the techniques needed to make three edgings in Chantilly lace.  A Chantilly bookmark pattern is included as extra practice in applying the techniques presented.  One repeat of each pattern is worked on camera with pin-by-pin instruction.

English Language.

Modern Flanders lace is a 19th century revival of a five-holed grounded lace that was made in the 1600's in many parts of lacemaking Europe.  The Glanders lace working diagram can be particularly confusing.  At many pins, a pair of bobbin pairs are worked; and, the frequent exchanges of passive and worker pairs crank up the level of confusion even more.  In this video, Sally tames the diagram.  She shows how to identify the elements of modern Flanders lace on a diagram and how to use those components to make a piece of Flanders lace.  In this program three edging patterns are used to teach the essential techniques: 5-hole ground, half of a ground stitch, joining in two times, input, outputs, snowflakes and the overlapping finish.

Lace is made in several cities and provinces in Russia such as: Jeletz, Kirov, Ryazan, Moscow and Vologda.  Each area has its own method of working the tapes.  In making Russian Tape Lace, either white or coloured threads can be used.

In this video, Lia shows how to make a Russian Tape Lace butterfly as it is made in Vologda.  She gives instructions for the starting of the lace, a stem stitch, a chain stitch, a false plait, turning a corner, a variety of fillings and the finishing of the lace.  An additional pattern for a doily is included for further practice.

English Language.

This DVD will show you how using colours can transform a simple Torchon pattern and provide endless possibilities for experimentation.  The first two patterns are designed to show how pairs move through the lace when using different stitches and techniques.  This knowledge is then used to control where the colours move in the following hree patterns for an edging, a square mat and a bookmark.  An additional pattern for a square mat is also included.  the instructions assume that you know how to wind bobbins, make a pricking and work the basic stitches, but starting and finishing, working ground stitches, spiders, cloth-stitch diamonds, roseground, footside edge and tow different fans are all explained step-by-step.

English Language.

This is an intermediate level program and you are expected to have already covered the basic Bucks Point techniques, although these are reviewed where they occur in the patterns.  The first Pattern is for a handkerchief edging and next comes a pattern for this edging with a cucumber footside.  The other patterns are for a bookmark, a hexagonal motif and a small medallion with a butterfly and flowers.  An additional pattern for a wider handkerchief edging is also included.  New Techniques introduced are explain step by step and include tallies in point and honeycomb ground, a corner where pairs have to be added and later removed, mayflower in honeycomb, cucumber footside, starting and finishing a bookmark, gimp fingers, working a hexagonal motif, holes in cloth stitch, and 'bundling' pairs at the headside.

Cover notes:

Clear instructions are given with the aid of diagrams and photographs so that the technique can be easily mastered.  There are also step-by-step instructions for making the background netting which, although time-consuming, some people will prefer to make themselves rather than rely on commercially produced fabric.

The sections of the book include a valuable and carefully research historical background to filet lace; netting instructions, techniques, how to make a Victorian filet lace bedspread and a final section on symbols and design.

The excellence of the illustrations of both historical and modern work, and the inclusion of specially prepared working charts together with a full bibliography make this an indispensable book for everyone who is interested in filet lace work.

In English language.

Cover notes:

Filet lace, or Lacis, is the traditional use of embroidery and darning stitches on a net ground.

The background to the modern-day inheritance of design and technique is followed up by instructions on basic methods with worked examples and step-by-step explanations of problems to be encountered and solved.

The main body of the book presents over 80 patterns, some dating from the Italian Renaissance and pre-Revolutionary France.  These are followed by chapters on freehand design techniques and tips on finishing and mounting worked pieces.

The authoress also illuminates the variants of filet, being Filet Guipure and Filet Richelieu.

Includes over 100 photographs, working diagrams and line illustrations.

In English language.

Cover Notes:

Closely related to the Sol laces of Spain and South America, Teneriffe is basically one of the simplest of the needlemade laces to create.

Using a blunt needle, the lacemaker darns and knots the design over a web of threads, stretch across a small pinwheel to form the medallion - the basic unit of the lace.

This book presents a brief history of the lace and shows how to make the basic wheel or loom using readily available materials.  Instructions are given for producing a simple round medallion and then adapting this to form square, oval, shield, pear and leaf shapes.

About 30 variations on the three basic stitches are describes, and a wealth of patterns is provided to be traced from the page.

Certainly one of the most versatile of the needlemade laces, Teneriffe can be used for borders, insertions and trimmings as well as for making whole panels and garments.  Even the most elaborate designs are based on simple stitches and techniques, bringing this traditional form of lacemaking well within the ability of the average needlewoman.

Introduction Notes:

This book expands on the basic techniques and patterns in ther first book "Bruges Flower Lace".

The book defines the steps involved in making one's own designs from the traditional Bruges Flower Lace shapes of flowers, leaves, scrolls, braids and fillings, and then progresses to explaining the various stages in making prickings from newly created designs.

The book contains over 20 new patterns.

Additional patterns and larger designs are included in this book.  A chapter is devoted to an explanation of how to produce a full-size pattern from a single section.  There is a wide selection of patterns, some simple and other more advanced.

An excellent and comprehensive text book on net making and net embroidery.

It has excellent step-by-step diagrams and photographs for the making of filet net and then the execution of the filling stitches.

Seven filling stitches are given, followed by 6 stitches for finishing the work.

Then, there are 30 projects which range from the simple to the more accomplished.  The subjects include floral motifs, brooches, hanky corners, butterfly, bird, thistle and lady with umbrella.

French language, but easy to follow.

This book was originally published under the title "Smocking, Fancy Stitches and Cross-Stitch and Darned-Net Designs" by Butterick in March 1900, as part of the Metropolitan pamphlet series.

Tulle embroidery, referred to in this book as Darned Net, illustrates many applications of this technique.

The smocking section  emphasises the specific methods of hand gathering the tulle fabric for smocking.

The section on fancy stitches offers a wealth of techniques as applicable to any surface embellishment as well as the popular use in crazy quilts.

Swiss cotton tulle is available from Josco Lace Supplies in a variety of sizes.

Another Lacis title, "Tulle Embroidery" complements this book beautifully to give you a comprehensive view of tulle embroidery and stitches.

This book is focussed on quick and simple motifs.

It begins with equipment and briefly covers the simple bobbin lace techniques used througout the book.

The book works through 20 Projects, starting with a tulip and other simple flower motifs, moving on to a three dimensional flower, and then other floral motifs for use as decorations.  Hair embellishments, brooches, chokers, necklaces, earrings, and table decorations

French Language, but easy to follow.

The nineteenth century saw a sad decline in the fortunes of the English hand-made lace industry yet in the East Midlands the period also witnessed some of its most interesting and remarkable designs.  A key figure in this achievement was the Bedford lace merchant Thomas Lester.  This book set his designs and the development of his family business against the fashions of the period, the conditions in the industry and of its workers, and the relentless competition from machine made lace

The quality of the lace is assessed and illustrated from examples surviving in the collections of the Cecil Higgins Art Gallery, Bedford, and the Luton Museum, Bedfordshire.

The same flowers can also be combined in a lace edging for a round or oval tablecloth.  The book also contains  patterns for othe rmats and doilies with flower motifs in varied grounds.

German text.

Christine Mirecki presents a collection of over 30 useful modern patterns in Milanese lace.  Typical Milanese braids are shown, each with a working diagram and illustration.

The patterns which follow make use of these braids in many attractive and colourful combinations.

Patterns include little hears, a large and varied selection of edgings for round and oval mats, as well as oval and square mats made entirely of lace, motifs for application, lace edgings, a curtain and three colourful scarves.

Working diagrams which double as prickings are provided.

German text.

The authoress introduced 20 different torchon grounds which are then put to use in the 16 patterns.  Coasters, table runner and edgings are worked in linen, a design for an entirely lace scarf, and two ends for scarves are worked in silk.  For all the patterns there are prickings, working diagrams and illustrations.

Dutch, German, English and French languages.

In the popular French handicraft series, this book about tatting brings 23 traditional patterns.  It is designed as a complete tatting course.  The foreword describes the history of tatted lace in France.  Then follow patterns for round, oval and rectangular mats and cloths, lace for handkerchief edgings with corners and 1 large collar.  The large format photos, coloured working idagrams and clear enlargements of details make it possible to work these patterns readily even without knowledge of French.

A collection of 36 patterns for Christmas motifs.

The book has a great variety of stars and angels, bells, hearts and candles, a nativity scene, as well as a traditional (to Saxony) incense burner in the shape of an old man smoking his pipe.

Some of the patterns have been inspired by Russian grounds or the Schneeberg technique.  They can all be made with just a few pairs.  Some include coloured or metallic threads.

Each pattern is accompanied by a colour photograph, pricking and detail drawings where necessary.

German language, but "do-able".

30 Christmas Motifs, including the three kings, an angel, Mary and Joseph and the baby Jesus, all stylised and with a novel use of beads.
